One thing we often came across was that the salesmen at used car dealerships couldn't tell us if the timing belt had been changed. According to what I've been told the belt needs changing at about 150k and we needed to find out for sure that it already HAD been changed or I would be looking at about $700 or so to have that done after I buy the car.
Though it was rumored that the New Beetle would get a new, more modern design for 2010, this didn't happen. A new, more aggressive design is coming in the next two years (current expectations are for an arrival in 2011). So if you can hold out, you might be rewarded with a fresher design, more interior room and better fuel economy. Then again, if you like the retro styling of today's New Beetle, your time may be running out to buy a new one.
